Obituary for Carl Poest

Carl Poest, age 64 of Zeeland, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Holland Hospital.

Carl graduated from Zeeland High School in 1967. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968 and served in the 9th Infantry Division in Vietnam. In February of 1969, he stepped on a booby trap during a hostile firefight and spent the next 9 months recovering from his wounds. Fresh out of the hospital, 2 members from the Disabled American Veterans Holland Chapter signed him up for the DAV. Carl married and had three children, but in 1985 his wife was killed in an automobile accident that left him to raise his three children on his own. It was a difficult job, but with help from others, he got the job done. He was active in raising his family, and in 1981 became active at the local Chapter of the Disabled American Veterans. He started out by working their bingo game, but was soon elected to serve in the chairs. He was elected Chapter Commander in 1985 and served until 1987. After being Commander, he was elected Adjutant-Treasurer and served as such up to his passing. In the early 1990s, Carl was elected to Jr. Vice Commander in Zone II and rose through the chairs, and remained active in all aspects of the DAV including State Conventions and some National Conventions. On the National Level, he was Deputy Chief of Staff in 1994 and was Deputy Chief of Staff for National Commander Donald Samuels during his term. On the State Level, after serving in the Zone Chairs, he had been on the Americanism Chairman Committee 9 out of 10 years. Carl had also served on the Ottawa County Michigan Veterans Trust Fund for the past 25 years and had been chairman for the last 20 years. On the Local Level, he had been Adjutant-Treasurer for the past 25 years at Holland Chapter 14. He also served as Secretary-Treasurer of the Holland Area Veterans Council, Chairman of the Avenue of Flags Committee, and was Vice President of the local Vietnam Veterans of American Chapter for the last 32 years. He also helped put on the local Memorial Day Parade in Holland for the last 18 years.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Elizabeth, his mother Hazel Poest, and his sister Shirlee Poest.
