Obituary for Elaine Walters

Elaine (Elzinga) Walters, special friend of Milt Schmiege, of North Muskegon and San Benito, TX, formerly of Holland, passed away on November 5, 2012 at Heartwood Lodge Hospice after twice battling Lymphoma over the past year.

Born in Borculo on December 17, 1932 to Tom and Edith Elzinga; she was raised in the Protestant Reformed faith which was ever present in her life as she grew up in West Michigan, married Ken Walters, and raised five children, moving across country to California for nine years and then back again.

She was an active TOPS member for almost 40 years; enjoyed bowling and swimming; and realized the immense joy she got from singing, especially the Lord’s praises, as she sang in many church choirs over the years, including the Messiah in Zeeland many times. She was also a generous giver of blood (with a rare type of O negative) who donated 27 precious gallons in her lifetime!

After her husband’s death in 2003, Elaine enjoyed sharing the last nine years of her life with Milton Schmiege in North Muskegon and San Benito, Texas, traveling many places around out beautiful country, following her goal of seeing as many National Parks and Monuments as they could.

She leaves behind many friends and family across the country, having lived in Holland and Muskegon, Michigan, San Benito, Texas, and the Redlands, California.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Dannevia Walters, grandson in law Lance E. Skiles, brothers Ted and Jim Elzinga, sister in law Verna Elzinga, and her husband, Kenneth in 2003.
