Obituary for Etta Elsinga

Etta (Huiskamp) Elsinga entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, April 23, 2008. She was born in Haren, the Netherlands on April 30, 1913, to Geertje and Johannes Huiskamp and was the eldest of three children.

After completing school, she worked at designing and sewing wedding garments and hats. She met her future husband, John, during this time. They married on August 29, 1939. In 1940, they welcomed the first of their eight children. After surviving the German occupation during World War II and assisting with the Dutch Resistance, they courageously immigrated to Holland, Michigan in 1951 with their seven children.

In Holland, Etta and John established a successful bakery, the French Pastry Shoppe on 8th Street. During those years, they lovingly raised their family and managed the bakery. She also found time to take her children for picnics and camping trips. After selling the business in 1972, Etta was able to spend more time pursuing her favorite pastimes, which included reading, gardening (any outdoor activity!), sewing, traveling and family time. She especially looked forward to visits from her niece, Eta, from the Netherlands.

Etta was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. She delighted in spending time with her children and their families. She created endearing and enduring memories through the sharing of stories, games and her carefree sense of humor. Etta was a strong, hard-working, loving woman, full of life, who supported everyone around her. Her strong Christian faith was evident in the way she lived her life. She was much loved and will be greatly missed.

Etta was preceded in death by her husband John, daughter Joan, grandson Bryant Gadison and great-grandson Stefan Veldheer.

She is survived by her children;
