Obituary for Gerrit J. Van Kampen

Gerrit J. Van Kampen, age 87, of Holland passed away on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at Oak Crest Manors of Holland.

Gite was born on February 8, 1923 to Jacob and Grace Van Kempen in Holland, MI. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II serving in Africa and Italy where he was wounded and lost his leg, he received the Purple Heart Medal. He attended Pine Lake Vocational School to learn watch repair. Gite worked at and later owned Dekker’s Jewelry in Zeeland for 42 years. He was a member of Beechwood Reformed Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, elder, consistory clerk and men’s work bee. Although he had an artificial leg, he loved to golf and was a member at Crestview Golf Course.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Ebert Van Kampen, sisters Mary Garvelink and Pearl Doolittle.

He is survived by his wife, of 65 years, Nelva (Schutt) and children:

Karen and Joe Kloet of Zeeland

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday, April 19, 2010 at Beechwood Reformed Church 895 Ottawa Beach Road in Holland. Reverends Jim Lankheet and Dawn Vagle will be officiating. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be Sunday 2-4 and 7-9PM at Lakeshore Memorial Services 11939 James Street in Holland. Memorial contributions may be made to Beechwood Church Prayer Garden or Hospice of Holland.
