Obituary for Mary Jean DeYoung

Mary Vlieger DeYoung crossed over into heaven on Monday, July 25, 2011, at Spectrum Hospital and Care Center following a brief but intense battle with cancer.

Mary DeYoung was born on January 28, 1953, to Bill and Sylvia Vlieger in Sioux Center, IA. Mary was active in numerous organizations in her church and school, holding leadership positions in most of them. Mary graduated as class valedictorian while being the yearbook editor for her high school. Mary always had a love for math, which she pursued at Hope College where she majored in math education.

After graduating with honors from Hope, Mary taught middle school math in Hudsonville for five years, taught part-time at Holland Community Education’s Learning Center for Adults, and for one year was the deputy head of school and a mathematics teacher for the inaugural year at Black River Public School. The majority of her teaching career was spent at Hope College as a member of the math faculty since 1982. Mary was an enthusiastic teacher of math teachers and won prestigious academic awards for her professionalism and knowledge of math education, including the Janet L. Anderson Excellence in Teaching Award in 2010. She was sought after as a math consultant and frequently held workshops throughout the country.

Mary wrote numerous articles for publications including the cover article in the October 2009 edition of Teaching Mathematics in Middle School, a chapter in another math book dealing with effective strategies in teaching, and many others.

In addition to enjoying any game or activity involving math, Mary was an avid tennis player, bridge player, and loved to ride her tandem bike with her beloved husband, Steve. Mary was active in Third Reformed Church by holding various leadership positions, being involved with the youth program, and was an advocate for those less fortunate than she by participating in various mission trips. She and Steve were active with the Holland Area CROP Walk for years.

Mary is survived by her husband of 37 years, Steve, and her son and his fiancée Andy DeYoung and Jessica Materson of Grand Rapids, MI, and her son and daughter-in-law Michael and Allison (Rich) DeYoung of Sarasota, FL. She is also survived by her mother, Sylvia Vlieger, of Sioux Center, IA; her sister Judy and her husband Ron Buseman of Sioux Falls, SD; her brother and his wife, Bill and Patty Vlieger of Houston, TX; and JoAnn and Vern Wichers of Le Mars, IA. Mary is survived by her parents-in-law Dr. James and Ruth DeYoung of Waupun, WI; Dirk DeYoung of Holland, MI; Patricia DeYoung and Brad Nauman of Salt Lake City, UT; Paul and Bonnie DeYoung of Sussex, WI; and Sarah DeYoung and Scott Mason of Wauwautosa, WII. In addition to the immediate family, Mary is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Visitation with the family will be on Friday, July 29, from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Third Reformed Church on 111 W. 13th St., Holland, MI.

The memorial service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, July 30, at Third Reformed Church in Holland with the Reverends Kama Jongerius and Kent Fry officiating.

A second memorial service will be 2:00pm Sunday, September 18, 2011 at Dimnent Chapel on the campus of Hope College, 277 College Avenue, Holland.
