Obituary for Rita L. Sarosik

RITA L. SAROSIK (Kaptur) 1919-2009

On July 25, 2009, Mom completed her journey on earth, dying peacefully in her sleep following a short illness. Rita was born on December 29, 1919, to Marie and Nicholas Kaptur in Detroit Michigan. She attended Pershing High School, and at the age of 15, first met Frank C. Sarosik. It was love at first sight for both of them. Frank returned home that day and told his father, “I met the girl that I am going to marry”. Ten years later, on December 30th, 1944, Frank and Rita were married in Detroit, Michigan. Sadly, Dad preceded Mom in death in 2002.

Rita’s claim to fame was her years of employment as a “Cigarette Girl” at that old Detroit Tigers’ Briggs Stadium, where she was assigned to the VIP boxes and the Tiger’s Dugout. She met many famous people during those years, including all of the Detroit Tigers and she came away with a love of baseball that lasted for the rest of her life. She was very aware of and especially happy that the Tiger’s are in first place.

Mom was the “Julia Child” of our family. She ceaselessly talked about, tasted, cooked and most especially shared food with family, friends and neighbors. Her big heart was always in her home and with her family. She loved gardening, ceramics, and decorating her home according to the seasons.

Rita had a generous heart and an ability to make almost everyone laugh. She will be missed and remembered by everyone that knew her, but most especially by her family.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Frank, her brothers Donald (Buddy), and Raymond (Chubby). She is survived by her brother Howard (Jimmy) and his wife Pat, her brother Nicholas and his wife Betty, her brother Kenny and his wife Rosemary, her daughter Carol Lynn and her partner Shelley, her son Roy Wayne and his wife Judy, her grandson Tony and his wife Corrie, as well as 5 granddaughters, many nieces and nephews and many many friends.

A memorial service will be held in Rita’s honor at the Village at Appledorn, 630 Hastings Street, Holland Michigan, at 11:00 am on Tuesday July 28, 2009. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Hospice of Holland or to a food bank of your choice in memory of Rita. An on-line registry book is available at www.lakeshorememorial.com.
