Obituary for Robert L. Gallup

Robert L. Gallup, age 86, formerly of Niles, Michigan passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2008 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Bob was born in Addison, Michigan on October 25, 1921, and grew up in Adrian, Michigan. His father, Leon Gallup, was a newspaperman (owned the Brooklyn Gazette and worked on many other newspapers in that area as well as later in Phoenix, AZ) and his mother, Laura Burke, was originally a teacher then joined Leon on the Brooklyn Gazette.

In 1939, Bob enrolled at the University of Michigan and 3 years into his BA Degree was drafted into the army. He was assigned to the Red Ball Convoy in the European Theater of World War II.

In France, 1945, he was married to Betty Clark of Akron, Ohio, and returned stateside. That same year, Bob was discharged as Captain Robert Gallup and returned to the University of Michigan where he completed his BA in Product Design.

His daughter, Diane Gallup (Sumner) was born in 1947 and the family moved to Niles, Michigan. Bob worked for Kawneer for several years, than partnered with Architect Trace Christensen to form their own company, Good Design Associates, located in South Bend, Indiana.
Over 25 years, Good Design Associates was responsible for many design and architectural projects including the Niles Public Library and Simplicity Pattern Company.

In 1966 he married Edna Hulce (formerly Edna Rathburn) of Niles. The same year Bob and Edna opened The Peacock (women’s clothing store) at Eastgate Shopping Center. Bob designed The Peacock logo, the store interiors, and advertising. The Peacock eventually expanded to 3 locations and closed upon their retirement in 1988.

During this time, Bob was a member of the Niles Chamber of Commerce and on their behalf designed the Four Flags license plate for the city of Niles. Bob was also a deacon, elder, and a 50 year member of the First Presbyterian Church.

In 2005, Bob and Edna moved from their longtime residence at 1622 Cedar Street to Holland, Michigan.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Diane, in 2003.

Bob is survived by Edna, his wife of 42 years. Diane's son, Jason Sumner of Richmond, VA and 4 stepchildren - Holly Mishke of Holland, Fred Hulce of Grand Rapids, Ann Nicholson of Hoboken, NJ and Andrew Hulce of Holland - 9 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren.

Bob is much loved and will be sorely missed.

A memorial service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at Lakeshore Memorial Services 11939 James Street in Holland (616)395-3630.

Visitation will be from 10:00 AM -10:45 AM one hr prior to the service at the funeral home. The family asks that donations be made to Hospice House of Holland, in lieu of flowers. An on-line registry book is available at for those who cannot attend the services.
