Obituary for Robert Stein

Robert James Stein, age 91, of Holland died Monday, April 5, 2010 at his home.

Robert was born in Chicago to Emil and Marguerite Stein. He grew up in Portage Park, attended Carl Schurz HS and went on to graduate from University of Chicago with plans of attending medical school, but the war interfered. He enlisted in the Navy and served in World War II and the Korean War. He was a gifted athlete as well. As an avid swimmer, he reached the pre-trials for the Olympics in platform diving and the butterfly and held a coveted life- guard position at Chicago beaches. Also a gifted tennis player, he dominated his children on the court for years and went on to win the Mens’ Doubles Championship in the State of Michigan’s Senior Olympics when he was in his 70's.
He was married to his love, Vivian Pearl Deyo, for 54 years. They raised four children in Jefferson Park and vacationed every year at their home in Saugatuck, Michigan, where they eventually retired.
Professionally, he worked in Human Resources, but his talents were wide ranging. He was invited to Czechoslovakia while the Iron Curtain still existed and spoke about the virtues of a free enterprise system. He was considered an expert on the U.S. Constitution and went to D.C. and spoke in front of Congress. He was generous; he and Vivian tutored for years at Hull House in Chicago and worked tirelessly to raise money for it. He was a devoted member of his church and often a guest speaker. These are only a few of his many accomplishments.
He was a wonderful father. He loved his children unconditionally and would have done anything for them… and did.
He died peacefully, sitting in his chair with his dog at his side.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Vivian, and children, Robert, Dena and Richard.
He is survived by his daughter, Vivian Lee- grandchildren, Max, Peter, Molly, Tyler, Megan, Kevin, Cassandra, Maggie, Heather, David and great-grandchildren, Brodie, River and Kendra.
