Obituary for Warren Robert Townsend Jr.

Warren R. Townsend Jr., age 86, of Zeeland died after a brief illness Saturday, December 12, 2009 at Providence Health Care.

Born and raised in Grand Rapids, he was a 1942 graduate of Ottawa Hills High School where he was a three time state wrestling champion and one time state runner-up. Foregoing a wrestling scholarship to Michigan State, Warren opted instead to join the Navy in July of 1942 where he spent 6 years as a Sonarman 1st Class, escorting convoys and chasing submarines in the Pacific theater of operations. While at Sonar School in Miami, FL., he met and married his wife, Bernice. Warren finished his Navy commitment by working on new technology with GE sonar researchers at the submarine base in Groton, CT. After the war, Warren and Bernice returned to Zeeland, MI where he worked for several years as the superintendent of the Townsend Manufacturing Company. He honed his cabinetmaker skills and eventually left to build his own successful furniture company, Royal Wood Products, also located in Zeeland. As a youngster, Warren raised championship beagles and loved to hunt and fish. He continued his passion for fishing to the present day where he took many Canadian trips in search of walleye with his best friend, John. Warren also enjoyed snowmobiling, airplanes and flying, traveling, hand-carving gun stocks, and spending time with family and friends, especially his four legged friend, Emma. He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Bernice; his sons, Warren IV and James; and his brother, Robert Townsend.

He is survived by his children:
