Age 79, passed away Monday morning, August 21, 2017, while listening to his favorite composer, Mozart. Mr. MacFarland was born on January 29, 1938 in Detroit, grew up in Grand Rapids, and graduated from Western Michigan University. He started his teaching career in Lyons, Michigan and then was the band director in Ionia for 36 years. In 1998, he started the Ionia Community Band which is still active today. Surviving is his wife of 48 years, Bonita (Bonnie); sister, Mary Forman; daughter, Carol (Stanley) Rediger; 4 grandchildren, Andrew (Kaitlyn), Stephen, Anna (Micah), and Katherine; 2 great-grandchildren, James and Caleb; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m., Thursday, August 24, 2017 at the Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich Street, Ionia. The Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Friday, at the Watt Auditorium, Ionia Middle School, 438 Union Street, Ionia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Ionia Public Schools – Endowment Scholarship Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to the Lehman Funeral Homes.
