George Gerard Vandevelde was the son of the late Alois Vandevelde and the late Elisa (Flameyjh) Vandevelde. George was a 1956 graduate of Catholic Central High School. He honorably served our country in the Army from February 1958 to November 1960.
On October 18, 1958 George married the love of his life the former Susan Alar at St. Michaels Church in Monroe by the Reverend Hugo Noetzel. From this union came the birth of four children. For over 30 years George was employed as a Freight Conductor with DT&I Railroad in Flat Rock, Michigan.
George was a member of many clubs and affiliations including St. John the Baptist Church, the Belgian-American Club, where he served as past president for several years, Monroe Senior Citizens, UTU, DT&I Railroad Old Timers. He truly loved the chaos of everyday life. He loved farming, especially baling hay. George loved playing cards and enjoyed Polka music and Polka dances.
George was a kind, hardworking man. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with his family. George was a friend to all who knew him. He was a generous man and loved helping those in need.
George Gerard Vandevelde age 74 of Monroe passed away peacefully at 8:15am; Thursday, November 22, 2012 in his home surrounded by his family. In addition to his parents, his passing was preceded by an infant daughter: Lisa Ann.
To cherish his memory he leaves a beloved wife: Susan of Monroe; a son: Joseph Vandevelde of Monroe; two daughters: Mary Price of Monroe, and Sandra (Michael) Lindquist of Brooklyn; a brother: Oscar Vandevelde; a special cousin: Pascal Flameyjh; five grandchildren: Jeremy Laura, Jennifer (Charles)Bundy, Jessica Vandevelde, Kevin Margrey and Phillip Price; seven great-grandchildren; Juel, Gabriel, Luke, Emma, Tatum, Jakoby and Kayden.
Friends may gather from 12:00-8:00pm, Sunday, November 25, 2012 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. He will lie in state at St. John the Baptist Church at 10:00am on Monday, November 26, 2012. The Mass of the Resurrection will take place at 11:00am. Rev. James Scheick will officiate. Procession will follow to St. Joseph Cemetery for burial.
