John Henry Cox was born in Kokomo, Indiana on October 29, 1926. He was one of six children born from the union of the late Claude and Tishie Mae (Keck) Cox. John enlisted in the United States Army and served honorably in Germany as a Paratrooper near the end of World War II.
After his service he took employment with Consolidated Packing, where he would support his family for many years. He left to work at Ford Motor Company attending trade school and serving as a millwright until his retirement in 1993.
John was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a lifetime member of the Brest Bay Sportsman Club in Newport where he enjoyed the companionship of many friends. He loved the outdoors and spent his free time gardening, fishing and hunting.
John Henry Cox, age 88, of Monroe passed away peacefully at Fall Kirk Assisted Living on Friday, December 12, 2014. In addition to his parents his passing was preceded by a son: Chris; his two brothers: Robert and Dan; and his three sisters: Edna Sharp, Opal Blevins, and Georgia Ellison.
To cherish his memory John leaves his beloved wife of sixty-seven years: Delores; a son: Jody and wife Sandy of Louisiana; a daughter: Beth Elpayaa and husband Magdy of Forest Park, Illinois; five grandchildren: Tracie Cox (Barb Brooks) of Newport, Stephanie Cox of Monroe, Adam Elpayaa of Normal Illinois, and Joseph and Sarah Elpayaa of Forest Park, Illinois.
Friends may gather from 2:00pm until 5:00pm on Sunday, December 14, 2014 at Merkle Funeral Service, 2442 North Monroe Street (734) 384-5185. A Memorial Service will follow at 5:00pm also at Merkle’s with Chaplain Jack Vanacker officiating. Graveside services will be held at 11:00am on Monday, December 15, 2014 at Roselawn Memorial Park, 13200 South Dixie Highway in LaSalle. Military honors will be under the auspices of Monroe Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1138.
