His mother had to be driven out to the main road by his father on the farm tractor. He grew up as the oldest son on a dairy farm just south of Marlette, MI. He has 3 brothers, Dale, Bryce, & Brent. He attended Montgomery one room schoolhouse until 8th grade.  For several years he was the only student in his grade. His high school years were spent attending Marlette High School, where he played baseball, basketball & football. He was involved in Future Farmers of America, & in the County Fair Live Stock show receiving several awards & Grand Champion for 2 years. He was involved with Marlette Church youth group & Youth for Christ in high school. He met his Lord & Savior at a tent meeting when he was 10 years old. His life was forever changed at that point. He grew in his faith & shared it in word & deed the rest of his life. After high school graduation he attended Baptist Bible College (now Cornerstone) in Grand Rapids , MI. After 2 years he decided he wanted a teaching degree, & to work with a Youth for Christ group in Mt. Pleasant, MI. so he transferred to Central Michigan University.  He became very involved in the college Campus Crusade for Christ group & the college & camp ministry at Strickland Church. In fall of 1968, he met his wife, Lesley Ann Johnson at a college ministry, & they were married in April 1969. Lowell completed his student teaching & began teaching junior high in Riverdale, MI, then annexing into Alma school district. It was in Alma that he would spend 39 years teaching junior high & high school. His passion was always to work with young people. Every fall he would share his own life-God journey with his classes. Also in teaching English he wove into his lessons lots of life & farm stories. He was blessed to be greeted by 100’s of students over the years with gleeful screams & hugs saying YOU WERE MY FAVORITE TEACHER, even receiving an award from C.M.U. as teacher of the year. He constantly wore a smile at church when he greeted former students & saw their love of God. For 37 years he held a student led Bible study during lunch period. Yes, even in public school.  In 2007, God took Lowell on a miracle life journey. He was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer. Doctors didn’t think he would come home from the hospital. He left school 2 days after telling his students about the WIN WIN concept. If he was going to die, he knew he would see his Savior in heaven & that was a WIN or if he survived he would WIN & be able to return to teaching them.  His son, Rob, started a string of miracles, one of which was God allowing Lowell to return to teaching. In 2009, he retired from teaching but always kept busy at church & loving on young people. He always had a servant’s heart & never stopped serving others. Lowell was blessed with 3 children: Jenna (John) Ruddell (St. Joseph), Robert (Trisha) Hager (Midland), & Emily (Kevin) Hathaway (Zeeland), eight grandchildren: Baylee, Izak, & Grant Ruddell, Madison Hager & Christopher Guillemette, & Ella, Addison, & Luke Hathaway. They were the love’s of his life. Lowell was predeceased by his parents, Robert & Edna (nee Gould) Hager. Our tears are shed for ourselves in our missing of Lowell, He is with his Lord & Savior awaiting our reunion in the future. We truly are the most blessed of all families to have had him in our lives loving us.
