Albin Hengesbach

We have lost a husband, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a friend and a teacher. Albin L. Hengesbach, age 70, son of Anthony and Marcella (Fedewa) Hengesbach born on December 15, 1938 in Westphalia Township, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2009. Al lived his entire life in Westphalia Township. He worked for 23 years for Westphalia Builders as a carpenter. In 1980 he established Albin Hengesbach Carpentry and Custom Cabinets and owned and operated it for 28 years. He was joined in business by his 4 sons. He had been a member of several business organizations, the Westphalia Knights of Columbus St. Jude Thaddeus Council, TPA, ABC, and an usher for St. Mary's Catholic Church where he was also a member. As he enjoyed semi-retirement his favorite pastime was his grandchildren, golfing, gardening, renewing and maintaing old and new friendships with everyone he met. Al was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sharon; sister, Evelyn Smith; brothers, Charles, Paul, and James Hengesbach; brother-in-law, Clarence Schafer; several brothers and sisters-in-laws. Surviving are his wife of 48 years, Ruth (Smith) Hengesbach; sons, John, Steven, and Brian Hengesbach of Westphalia, and Glenn (Amanda) Hengesbach of Lansing; daughter, Carolyn (Brent) Henry of Lansing; 6 grandchildren, Kaitlyn, William, Layne, Matt, Abby, and Nick; sister, Marie Schafer of Mecosta; 3 brothers, Donald (Kathy), Mark, and Anthony (Sharon) Hengesbach, all of Westphalia; brother-in-law, Charles Smith of Grand Ledge; 3 sisters-in-law, Janet Hengesbach and Patti Hengesbach of Westphalia, and Kathy Hengesbach of Eagle; several brothers and sisters-in-law. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 11:30 am Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at St. Mary's Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 pm Sunday and Monday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 pm Sunday and 3 pm Monday. There will be a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 pm Monday. Arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
