Aloysius Schmitz

Age 77, passed away on Tuesday, January 6, 2004.  He was born on April 1, 1926 in Westphalia, MI the son of Michael and Regina (Feldpausch) Schmitz.  Mr. Schmitz was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army, a Past Commander of the Portland VFW Post # 4090, and a life member of the Lyons-Muir VFW Post 3 4646.  He loved going to the VFW every Friday and play cards.  He loved to fish, dance, have a cold drink with family and friends, and a good game of cards.  He was preceded in death by his wife of 37 years, Josie J. Schmitz; daughter Brenda; brother, Raymond "Rip" Schmitz.  Surviving are his children, Kelli (William) Hoffmann of Belize, Central America, Roger (Ginger) Schmitz of Lansing, J.D. (Karen) Miller of Vermontville, Judy Gladding of Byron,  Diane Schafer of Portland, and Debbie Osborne of Muir; many grandchildren and great grandchildren; siblings, Marge Platte of Westphalia, Jeanette Thelen of Ovid, Fritz (Rosie) Schmitz of Pewamo, Wilma Bambrick of Lansing, Alice Hoover of Lansing, Trudy (Jerome) Schafer of Dewitt, Edward (Joan) Schmitz of Fowler, and Michael (Hilda) Schmitz of Fowler; sister-in-law Wilma Schmitz of Fowler; several nieces, nephews, and relatives.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Melvin Fox at 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 9, 2004 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Portland with Rite of Committal following at Portland Cemetery.  Military Graveside Honors will be provided by the Portland VFW Post # 4090 and the Lyons-Muir VFW Post # 4646.  The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.  The rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday and 8 p.m. Thursday.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Ionia Area Hospice in memory of Aloysius "Al" J. Schmitz.
