Obituary for Arthur W. Matthews

Ionia, MI



Age 89, passed away on Saturday, March 29, 2003.  He was born on July 3, 1913 in Jackson, MI the son of William and Leatha (Clark) Matthews.  Mr. Matthews was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II, and was a member of the Ionia VFW Post #3732, and the Ionia Moose Lodge.  He married the former Donnabelle Bennett on January 11, 1948 and she preceded him in death on June 17, 1990, alon with a daughter, Lorna Gayrit in 1978.  Mr. Matthews was an avid horseshoe player, winning many championships over the years, and also bowled for many years.  He was involved in Little League in Ionia and also drove school bus.  He managed the Farmers Gas and Oil for 2 years, worked as a mechanic for Pesche Meat Packing Co. in Ionia for 10 years, worked for 12 years at the Standard Supply and Lumber in Ionia, and also worked for Sids Flower Shop in Ionia as a delivery man.  Surviving are 5 sons, David (Karen) Matthews of Ionia, Paul (Marilyn) Matthews of Orleans, Wayne Matthews of Muir, Steve Matthews of Ionia, and William (Terri) Matthews of Ionia; 2 daughters, Neola Gereau of Gladstone, MI and Marlene (Alan) Housler of Manistique, MI; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; brother, Kenneth (Verna) Matthews of Brookfield, Illinois; several nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Service will be conducted by the Rev. Marvis Hale at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia with interment following at Orleans Cemetery.  Military Honors will be provided at the Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.  There will be a funeral lunch served at the Ionia Moose Lodge following interment.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Moose Charities in memory of Arthur W. Matthews.
