Betty Jean Nowak Portland Age 80, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother passed away on Sunday, December 2, 2007. She was born on September 27, 1927 the daughter of Claude and Hazel (Ortt) Lytle. Betty loved her family and enjoyed having them around, her friends and social life were very important to her. She enjoyed reading. She graduated from Ionia High School in 1945. Betty was a member of the Red Hatters Society and the Portland Garden Club. She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert. Surviving are children, John (Gail) Nowak of East Grand Rapids, Mary (David) Bouck of Saranac, Sue Lang of Winnetka, CA, Karen (Stephen) Spitzley of Portland, Nancy (Craig) Carpenter of Costa Mesa, CA, and William (Melinda) Nowak of Portland; 12 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Arlene Fancett of Orleans, and sister-in-law, Beverly Nowak of California. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 6, 2007 at the Portland First United Methodist Church, with Rev. Andy Croel officiating. Interment will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Contributions may be made to either the Portland Garden Club, or the Portland Public Library.
