Carl Smith

Age 85, loving husband, father, and grandfather, died peacefully on Thursday, December 9, 2004 at the Hazel Findlay Health Care Center in St. Johns surrounded by family. Carl was born in Portland Township, MI, September 10, 1919 the son of Nicholas and Rosa (Pohl) Smith. A veteran of World War II, Carl served in the 8th Air Force 95th Bomb Group for 3 1/2 years. He was employed at TRW in Portland for 28 years, retiring in 1981 from the machine repair department, where his nickname was "Quick" Carl . Carl was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus Council #2168, and the Portland VFW Post #4090. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Evelyn Kramer; 2 infant brothers, Lewis and Florian. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Cecilia (Cook) Smith; four daughters, Agnes (William) Fedewa of Shelby Twp., Annette (Thomas) Fetzer of Portland, Mary Ann (John) Augst and Loretta (Thomas) Schelter, both of Sunfield; son, Ronald (Patricia) Smith of Grand Ledge; 8 grandchildren, Mike (Michelle) Fedewa, Steve (Carol) Fedewa, Julie (Chris) Imber, Eric Fedewa, Dana Schelter, Renee (fiance, Aaron Sutter) Schelter, Rachel Augst, Will Augst; 2 step grandchildren, Brennan and Brandylee Wickerham; 4 great grandchildren, Mitch, Katie, Emily and Matthew Fedewa; brother, Richard (Betty) Smith of Portland; sisters, Lucille (Paul) Fedewa and Harriet (Bernard) Pohl, both of Westphalia. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 11, 2004 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 140 Church Street, Portland, with the Rev. Larry King, Pastor, presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery, with Military Honors provided by the Portland VFW Post #4090. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, December 10, 2004. A rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday. The family would like to thank the staff at the Hazel Findlay Country Manor for all the loving care Carl received during his 2 1/2 year stay there. Carl will be remembered for his love of people and his wonderful sense of humor. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Father Flohe Foundation, the Ionia County Commission on Aging, or the Hazel Findlay Country Manor of St. Johns, in memory of Mr. Carl P. Smith.
