Charles VanDenburg Obituary

On Tuesday, July 15, 2008 the family of Charles Kingsley VanDenburg said goodbye to their beloved husband, father, and grandfather. Chuck (or Charlie) was born on September 25, 1940 in Litchfield, MI to Philip and Arlyce VanDenburg, both deceased. He was a man of great intensity whose greatest passions in life were spending time with his family and friends, serving others, wine, cooking, and Spartan sports. Chuck was known for his passion for anything French, including sharing his travel experiences. Chuck graduated from Litchfield High School and Michigan State University. He taught at Ionia Public Schools for 29 years, during which he was an FFA advisor. Chuck was active in many church and community organizations: the Ionia Free Fair department head for 35 years; he was on the board for Habitat for Humanity; the Jaycees, and the Boy Scouts. He was an active member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, by serving in many capacities as lay distributor, administering communion to shut ins, SSPP Parish council and school board, plus the Ionia Knights of Columbus. Over the years Chuck played an active role with the Michigan One Credit Union. Since 1971, he has served the Credit Union on several committees and chairman of the board. He was a hardworking man, always willing to help anyone who needed an extra hand, and will be sadly missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 45 years Sally; son Steve (Marcy); daughters, Diane VanAntwerp (Tom) and Kristi Fellows (Greg); grandchildren, Nick (10), Ashley (7), Kai (12), Kyra (9), Riley (9), and Jordan (7); siblings, William (Jan), Gretchen (Ernie), Carolyn (Kerry), and many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Melvin Fox, Pastor at 11 a.m. Friday, July 18, 2008 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia with Rite of Committal following at Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Ionia. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 RIch Street, Ionia from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School in memory of Charles Kingsley VanDenburg.
