Coralane Boyes Obituary

Coralane McLeod Boyes of Ionia died Sunday, October 23, 2005 at Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids, following a four-day illness. She was 85 years of age and a lifelong resident of Ionia County. Coralane was born in Portland to Guy and Floy (Van Houten) McLeod, but lived most of her life in Ionia. She was a graduate of Ionia High School, and while there developed what became a lifelong interest in genealogy. It lead to the searching of records, historical documents and newspaper files in Scotland, and eventually to the long-forgotten location of her great-great grandfather's grave. She has since arranged with the local parish for the ongoing care and upkeep of the grave and marker. Coralane was a member of Clan MacLeod Society, and for several years served as the Great Lakes area's vice president. Her work was recognized in 1997 when she was named Clan MacLeod's Clansperson of the Year. Coralane was active both in church and community affairs, serving her parish as organizer of the Parish House Guild which raised the funds to refurbish the restored, historic building. She also served as president of the Episcopal Church Women, and for several years was Youth Group director. Coralane spent many years as the Girl Scout leader, and worked in summer months at Girl Scout Day Camp. For more than 50 years she was a Red Cross volunteer, working primarily as registrar at Ionia bloodmobiles. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Velva Johnson; two brothers, Roswell and Verland McLeod. She is survived by her husband, Harry; five children, Geoffrey (Joy) Boyes, Charmaine (Robert) Miller, Charlene (James English) Boyes, Margo (Steve) McCord and Dawn (Ronald) Huhn; ten grandchildren; three great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. A Requeim Eucharist will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Friday, October 28, 2005 at St. John's Episcopal Church in Ionia. Interment of her ashes will follow immediately at Tuttle Cemetery, Ionia. Memorial gifts may be given to the Guy McLeod Piping Scholarship of the Dunvegan Foundation, P.O. Box 17303, Raleigh, NC 27619. Complete arrangements were entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Ionia.
