David Hanses

David Louis Hanses Westphalia Age 83, passed away on December 20, 2016. He was born on December 11, 1933, the son of Joseph and Laurina (Wirth) Hanses. David was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, St. Joseph Society, Catholic Order of Foresters, Commercial Carpenter Local 1004, and the V.F.W. Post 3733, Fowler, Pewamo, and Westphalia. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. David was a master wine maker, skilled woodworker, and a life-long farmer. He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Benjamin Hanses; brother, Reynold (Rosie) Hanses; brothers-in-law, Simon Smith, Robert Barker, and Reece Hattis; and in-laws, Louis and Hilda Thelen. David is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Kathryn “Kate” Hanses; children, Debra (Tony) Fedewa, Cindy (Tom) Coulter, Joe (Michele) Hanses, Mary Kay (Philip) Thelen, Bruce (Melissa) Hanses, Daniel Hanses, and Becky (Randy) Wellman; 26 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren, with one on the way; siblings, Revella Smith, Kathleen Barker, Dorothy Hattis, and Liz (Bob) Spitzley; in-laws, Sr. Donna Jean Thelen O.P., Jim (MaryAnn) Thelen, Donna (Phil) Kramer, Tony (Maryann) Thelen, Bill (Diane) Thelen, Bonnie (Bob) Pearson, and Sue Thelen. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Fr. Eric Weber at 10:30 a.m., Friday, December 23, 2016 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. The Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary’s Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday and 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Thursday. The rosaries will be prayed at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Westphalia Fire Department and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in memory of David. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes.
