Edward Mallek Obituary

Portland Loving husband, father and grandfather passed away on August 3, 2010. He was born on December 16, 1939 in Lansing, Michigan. Ed was an avid gun collector and loved hunting, traveling and photography. He especially enjoyed spending time with his seven grandchildren. He served 5 years in the U.S. Navy, worked at Chrysler Lyons Plant and Michigan National Bank before retiring from the Grand Rapids Public Library, where he served as the facility manager for the city library system. Ed was a member of the Knights of Columbus #2168, American Legion, Friends of the Portland Public Library and a long time member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. Ed is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Connie (Dembowski), loving children: Katrina (Jeff) Kalo of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Denise (Jerry) Johnson of Portland, Edward II (Nikki Guldager) of Fairbanks, Alaska and Damon (Wendy) Mallek of Portland; 7 grandchildren Jessica, Sarah and Katherine Johnson, Jennifer and Danelle Kalo, Elizabeth and Mitchell Mallek. brother Ronald (Betsy) Mallek of Weston, Florida. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn and parents Leo and Margaret Mallek. The Mass of Christian will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 6, 2010 at St. Patrick Catholic Church with Rev. Larry King, presiding. Rite of Committal will be in Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m.. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m.. In lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the "Friends of the Portland Public Library" and Art & Environment Association of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
