Esther Marie Hickok Ionia Esther M. Hickok, age 98, passed away June 13, 2007 at her home in Ionia. She was born June 27, 1908 in Reading, MI. the daughter of John and Sadie (Kinsey) Dygert. She graduated from Reading High School and attended Ypsilanti Normal College where she received her teaching certificate. She taught at Harbor Springs and in the Hillsdale/Reading area for several years. She married Glenn G. Hickok on November 28, 1929 in Reading, MI. and they were together fo 64 years. After living in several different locations during the depression years, they settled in Ionia in 1937. She was employed by the Ionia Public Schools for over 20 years, serving in the capacity of accountant and personal secretary to the superintendents. She was very active in the Eastern Star and First Baptist Church of Ionia. Both she and her husband enjoyed fishing and camping. They moved to a permanent home at Long Lake in 1956 and also spent numerous winters in Florida after their retirements. Glenn preceded her in death in 1993, as did their son Willard Hickok in 1986 and her brother Jay Dygert. She is survived by two daughters, Janet and Sanford Yeomans and Ardith Marino both of Ionia; a daughter-in-law, Noreen Hickok of Traverse City, and a sister-in-law, Doris Spieth of Hillsdale and nieces and nephews. Also surviving are her grandchildren: Carol Woolston, Steve Hickok, Terry Hickok, Gregg Yeomans, Brenda DuFresne, Julie Lake, Mark Hickok, Melissa Balkin, and Victoria Davolt and additionally 20 great grandchildren, 18 great great grandchildren, 8 stepgrandchildren, and many step great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 18, 2007 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia with Pastor Larry Brown presiding. Interment will be in Orleans Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to either Friends of the Ionia Library, the Ionia High School Scholarship Fund or to Ionia Area Hospice.
