On the Feast of the Holy Angels, Our dear Lord called our loving Dad to his heavenly home on Thursday, October 2, 2003 at the age of 91. He was born on August 10, 1912 in Lansing the son of  Mark Lehman and Elizabeth Esch. Fred married his beloved Ann M. Curtin at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Portland on September 11, 1934 (69 years ago). Fred and Ann raised five sons, Francis W (Ginger) of Portland, John F. of Lyons, Samuel M. (Marcy) of Woodland, David R. (Rhonda) of Hastings, Daniel (Carol) of Bark River, 2 daughters, MaryAnn (James R) Fedewa of Westphalia, and Constance E. (Mark) Huckendubler of Sunfield, 30 grandchildren, 61 great grandchildren, 6 great great grandchildren. He is survived by his youngest sister Margaret "Margie" Parks of Live Oaks, FL; sister-in-law Phyllis Lehman of Lansing. His parents preceded him in death as well as 3 brothers. George, Harold, and Mark; 2 sisters Kate and Betty; granddaughters, Michelle Floyd and Kathy Lehnert. Fred retired in 1975 as a State of Michigan Itinerant Instructor for the plumbing and Pipefitting Trades Journeyman ans Apprentice Program. Fred was a Master Plumber,  a charter member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 333 of Lansing. He was initiated on August 20, 1941. Fred joined the Portland Knights of Columbus Council 2168 at 18 years of age and immediately was an active member of the degree staff; his son-in-law, James R. Fedewa was Michigan State Deputy from 1888-90. Fred was a member of St. Patrick's Choir for 65 years. He held honorary degrees from U of M in Ann Arbor, MI and Purdue University, Lafayette, IN from which he received his instructor certification.. He was also a member of a local barbershop Quartet, Valley City Four and S.P.E.B.S.Q.S.A. Chorus in Lansing in the 1950's. Fred always enjoyed fishing, hunting, and gardening_he is a legend in the plumbing, welding and pipefitting trades and taught his skills to hundreds of journeymen throughout the central and western portions of the State of  Michigan He was known especially for his precision sheet metal skills turning out complicated custom-fit ductwork and fittings for heating systems. His legacy, brilliant mind and loving mannerism will be long remembered. Memorial classrooms have been dedicated in his honor at the new Plumbers/Pipefitters Trades School in Coopersville, MI. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Shamaun Beas, Associate Pastor at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 6, 2003 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at Portland, cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. A Scripture Service will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Sparrow Hospice Services, in memory of Frederick Mark Lehman.
