Harold Smith

Harold John Smith Westphalia, Michigan Harold John Smith passed peacefully from this world at Sparrow Hospital on December 19, 2014, with his family at his side. He was born in Westphalia on April 2, 1936, to Leonard and Pauline (Schrauben) Smith, and was the eldest of eight. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Catholic Order of Foresters, 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, "Vigilantes", Westphalia Historical Society, Saint Joseph Society, was a volunteer firefighter, served in the army, and retired from Consumers Power. On November 23, 1957, he married Clara Pung and together they raised seven children. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, his sister and brother in law Elaine and Ron Gamble, and his brother Leon. He is survived by Clara, his wife of 57 years, his seven children: Terry (Maureen), Kevin (Marsha), Lisa Grove, Sherry (Charlie) Thelen, Brenda (Bill) Schafer, Tina (Kevin) Baldwin, Karla (Paul) Evansen and and his twenty-one grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings: Norman (Mary Jane), Barb (Jake) Eager, Marie (John) Scheurer, Betty (Pat) Cavanaugh, and Gladys (Chris) Starr, in laws: Sandy Smith, Larry (Suzy) Pung, Elaine Gaffney, Diane (Peter) Arzberger, Don (Pam) Pung, Teresa (Ken) Quartermus, and many nieces and nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, December 23, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia, with Rev. Eric Weber presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Sunday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Sunday and 3 p.m. Monday, and a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
