Portland Age 77, passed away on Saturday, December 6, 2008. He was born on March 5, 1931 in Riley Township the son of Herman and Bertha (Trierweiler) Schrauben. Herm was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, K of C Council #2168, F.O.E., AmVets, American Legion and Portland Bowling Association Hall of Fame. After high school graduation he went to barber school in Detroit. He returned to Portland and went into the barber shop business with his brother, Ken for 25 years. In 1972, Herm and Ken purchased the Wagon Wheel Bar and owned and operated it until 1997, when his son, Chopper carried on the family business. He was active in real estate in the Portland area. Herm is a veteran of the United States Air Force, enjoyed bowling, golfing, photography, and gardening. He enjoyed spending winters in Gulf Shores, AL. and time on the Muskegon River in Big Rapids. On July 12, 1951 he married Jaclynn Gardner and she preceded him death. On June 28, 1985 he married Carole (VanAmburg) Howland. Herm is preceded in death by his parents, sister Bernice Fitzmaurice and a grandson Joshua Bengel. Surviving are his wife, Carole; children Daniel (Melody) Schrauben of Portland, Dr. Douglas (Cindy) Schrauben of Mt. Pleasant, Cheryl (Jeff) Bosworth of Sunfield, Jack (Terri) Schrauben of Portland, Brenda (Joseph) Smith of Portland, Terry "Chopper" (Jonda) Schrauben of Portland, Jim (Karen) Howland of Portland and Patrick (Jami) Howland of Portland and Kristin (Wayne) Rivet of Lansing; 21 grandchildren; siblings Gerald (Rita) Schrauben, Janet Sutherland, Kenneth (Donna) Schrauben, Roy (Carolyn) Schrauben, and Michael (Roberta) Schrauben; brother-in-law John Fitzmaurice; mother-in-law Mary VanAmburg; sister-in-law Marylou (Roger) Bullen; special friend Tom Sutherland; several aunts and uncles and many nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 10, 2008 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Rev. Larry King, presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. Military Honors will be provided by the Portland V.F.W. Post #4090. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Monday and Tuesday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. bridge St., Portland. The rosaries will be prayed 3 and 8 p.m., Monday and 3 p.m., Tuesday. A Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m., Tuesday.
