Herman Smith Obituary

Age 71, passed away on Friday, November 28, 2003.   He was born on November 8, 1932 in Altona, MI the son of King Henry and Anna Catherine (Bacon) Smith.  Mr. Smith retired from Portland Public Schools in 1995 after 18 years of service.  Herman was a member of the Ionia Seventh Day Adventist Church, serving as a Deacon.  Mr. Smith also volunteered at the Community Service Center, the Adventure Club, and the Seventh Day Adventist Church.  He married Mary Magdalene Little on February 19, 1955 and together they shared 48 years of marriage.  Preceding him in death are his parents; 2 brothers, Thomas Leroy and Max Leonard Smith; granddaughter, Heather Denise Decker.  Surviving are his wife, Mary Magdalene Smith of Lowell, MI; 4 daughters, Sharon ( Eugene) Decker of Hubbardston, MI, Penny (Gary) Martin of Portland, MI, Cindy (Stan) Owen of Indiana, and Brenda (Dale) Moore of Sumner, MI; son, Herman Smith, Jr. of Portland, MI; 10 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; brother, Melvin Richard (Alta Mae) Smith of Ithaca, MI; 2 sisters, Betty Lawrence of Lakeview, MI and MaryAnn (Jim) Risk of Arkansas.  The Funeral Service will be conducted by the Rev. Carl Tsatalabidis, Pastor of the Ionia Seventh Day Adventist Church at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 2, 2003 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich Street, Ionia.  Interment will follow at Tuttle Cemetery, Ionia.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. Monday.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the wishes of the family, in memory of Mr. Herman L. Smith.
