Hughes Southwell
Hughes G. "Lad" Southwell, age 89, passed away on Thursday, May 22, 2003 at Addington Place in Northville. He had lived previously in Pleasant Ridge, Dayton, Ohio, in Huntington Woods, Franklin, and most recently on Old Mission Peninsula, Traverse City. Hughes was born and raised in Portland, the eldest son of James W. Southwell and Mabel Clarissa Hughes Southwell, a member of the Portland Congregational Church. He was born February 1, 1914 on the family farm in Danby Township, first attended the Barr one-room school, graduated from Portland High School, Class of 1931, and attended Ferris Institute, Big Rapids. On September 26, 1937 Hughes married Doris Angelyn Birdsall, daughter of Rev. Ray V. Birdsall and Minnie Cora Bailey Birdsall at Potter Park Church, Lansing. She preceded him in death September 10, 1987, on her birthday, following a long struggle with lymphoma. He was preceded in death also by both of his parents, by three sisters, Phyllis Snyder McClimans, Mesa AZ; Janet S. Dalcher, Washington, DC; and Marjorie Kreger, Washington, DC; and by one brother, James Malcolm, Lansing. Hughes is survived by his five children, Michael (Lillian) Bloomingdale, NJ; Carol (John) Murray, Traverse City; James (Dorie), Gross Ile; Pamela (Kenneth) Howitt, China Township; Mary Jo, Oak Park; and by seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Hughes is survived also by one brother, Langdon (Unis), Suttons Bay; and many nieces and nephews, as well as grand-nieces and -nephews. During an extensive business career Hughes produced and staged large industrial shows, Business Theater, meetings, and conventions for business and industry here and abroad. He served as Dayton Branch Manager during the war years 1941-1951; Assistant Sales Manager; Automotive Account Executive; Senior Vice President - General Market Sales; retiring in 1973 as Executive Vice President and Operating Officer for the company he joined as a male stenographer in 1934. Private family services will be scheduled in Portland by Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home. Mr. Southwell will be buried in the family plot in Portland Township Cemetery.
