Obituary for John P. O'Connor

Age 80, of Ionia, passed away on October 5, 2003 at the Ionia County Memorial Hospital.  He graduated from Ss. Peter and Paul Academy in 1941.  John served in the U.S. Army Air Corp. during World War II.  He married the former Mary V. Westdrop on July 12, 1947 at Holy Name Catholic Church in Grand Rapids.  He assumed the family business from his parents in 1946 and owned and operated the O'Connors Grocery & Party Store on the corner of Lincoln Ave. and Dexter St. until retiring in 1977.  He was a life member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Ionia, a member and past District Deputy and past Grand Knight of the Ionia Knights of Columbus Council # 944.  John also was a 4th Degree member of the Bishop Edward Kelly Council # 0473 of Grand Rapids.  He was a past Commander of the Ionia American Legion Post 37, former member of the Ionia Elks and the Ionia Jaycees.  Surviving are his wife of 56 years Mary V. O'Connor; 5 children:  Dr. Carol A. O'Connor of Clawson, MI, Jean (Paul) Barker of Ionia, Bob (Cindi) O'Connor of Comstock Park, MI, Tom (Carol) O'Connor of Orleans, MI, and Jo Ellen O'Connor of Caro, MI; 5 grandchildren: Suzanne and Kristi Barker, Michael, Kevin, and Tim O'Connor; 1 brother, Rex P. (Mary) O'Connor of Ionia, MI; numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews.  John was preceded in death by his parents, Peter and Lottie O'Connor; 1 sister, Honora O'Connor.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 a.m. Thursday October 9, 2003 from Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Ionia with Fr. Melvin Fox and Fr. Thomas Boufford, co-celebrants.  Rite of Committal will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Ionia.  Visiting hours:  7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday and 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday with a Rosary service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday under the auspices of the Ionia Knights of Columbus, at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, 220 Rich St., Ionia.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Ss.
