May, Katherine M. Kalamazoo, MI. Age 86, passed away on October 22, 2003 at Borgess Medical Center Katherine was born on March 15, 1917 in Portland, MI. the daughter of William F. and Anna G. (Bohr) May. Katherine lived in Kalamazoo area for 38 years. She graduated from St. Camillus School of Nursing, The Catholic University of America and St. Louis University. Katherine was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Kalamazoo and was a lifetime member of the American College of Health Care Executives, the Parchment Garden Club and various other organizations. She was a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Nazareth for approximately 38 years, serving as both a member of the Leadership Team and the SSJ Hospital Consultant. She spent 44 years in the health care field, which included service as: Vice President St. Joseph Hospital in Flint; Director of the St. Joseph School of Nursing; President Board of Trustees Member and other administrative roles at Borgess Medical Center in Kalamazoo. At the time of her retirement, Katherine was Vice President of Patient Care Services at Borgess. In retirement she wrote two family history books, those of the May-Reist and the Bohr-Huhn families. In addition to her parents, Katherine was preceded in death by 3 sisters and 2 brothers: Mary Ann May Spitzley, Elizabeth May, Ruth May Spitzley, Harold H. May, and William C. May. Surviving are 3 sisters and 4 brothers: Dorothy A. Barker of Portland, Laurina E. (Robert) Spitzley of Mulliken, Sister Joan M. May, SSJ of Goodrich, Robert W. (Marie) May of LaVerne CA, Fred J. (Germaine) May, Carl J. (Germaine) May, and Leon D. (Geraldine) May all of Portland; many nieces and nephews, many dear friends, including Esther Barrett and Martin and Barbara Verzi all of Kalamazoo. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Shamaun Beas, Associate Pastor at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 27, 2003 at St. Patrick's Catholic Chruch, Portland. Rite of Committal will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St. Portland. The rosary will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m., Saturday and 3 p.m., Sunday. A scriptural wake service will be held at 8 p.m., Sunday. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Fr. Flohe Foundation or the Catholic Common Ministry of Diocese of Kalamazoo in memry of Katherine.
