Leo O'Neill

Age 77, passed away on Tuesday, February 11, 2003.  He was born on March 31, 1925 in Big Rapids, MI the 16th of 18 children to Sylvester and Mary (Marlette) O'Neill.  Mr. O'Neill was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church. He owned and operated O'Neill's Adult Foster Care Homes in Portland for 35 years, and worked at TRW for 29 years.  He was a Veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II in the European and Pacific Theaters, and was a 43 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, being very instrumental in starting several meeting groups from Lansing to Grand Rapids.  He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Blaine O'Neill. Surviving are his wife, Jerry of Grand Rapids; children, Lillian Castronova of Portland, Gina (John) Voorheis of Grand Ledge, Al O'Neill of Portland, and Joni (Kurt) Epps of Portland; 15 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; sisters, Edna Cady of Big Rapids, and Joyce McDarmid of Illinois.  The family would like to thank Dorothy Vollen for all of her help and kindness shown to Leo over the years.  The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charles D. Hall, Pastor at 11:00 a.m. Friday, February 14, 2003 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday.  A rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. and a Scriptural Wake Service will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, in memory of Leo T. O'Neill.
