Leon H. Smith Westphalia, MI Age 76, passed away on Monday, February 3, 2014. He was born on August 27, 1937 in Westphalia Township, MI the son of Leonard and Pauline (Schrauben) Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Leon married his best friend and shared 54 years wonderful years with his loving wife, Sandra (Fritch) Smith. He was a building contractor for most of his life, and enjoyed traveling, especially to the cottage "Up North" and Bullhead City, AZ. Leon also enjoyed golfing, fishing, snowmobiling, watching sports, horse racing, and an occasional trip to the casino. He was known for his shoulder shaking laugh and mischievous twinkle in his eye. Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Elaine (Ron) Gamble; brother-in-law, Tom Fritch; in laws, George and Dorothy Fritch. Surviving are his wife of 54 years, Sandra; children, Debra Ross, Karen (Lee) Thelen, Gerri Smith, Brian (Lori) Smith, Jayne (Brian) Wieber, and Tracie (Paul) Trierweiler; grandchildren, Dylan (Thuy), Jessica, Kelli (Matt), Andrew (Gina), Nicole (Ben), Zachary, Derrick, Jared, Kirstie, Kenzie, Nick, Kyle, Josh, and Grace; 9 great grandchildren; siblings, Harold (Clara) Smith, Norm (Mari) Smith, Barbara (Jake) Eager, Marie (John) Scheurer, Betty (Pat) Cavanaugh, and Gladys (Chris) Starr; many nieces and nephews; "special pets", Katie and Lizzie. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 7, 2014 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Westphalia, with Rev. Mathias Thelen presiding. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. Military Grave side Honors will be provided by the V.F.W. Post #3733. The family will receive friends from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, and 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. Rosaries will be prayed at 8 p.m. Wednesday and 3 p.m. Thursday, and a Scriptural Wake Service held at 8 p.m. Thursday. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland.
