Louis Cook
Age 75, passed away on Wednesday, April 2, 2003 at his residence with his family by his side, following a short illness. He was born on March 22, 1928 in Pewamo the son of Joseph and Mabel (Dwyer) Cook. Lou graduated from the University of Detroit in 1950 as a civil engineer. Lou retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation in 1989 after 39 years of service. He has been employed by the Ionia County Road Commission since 1989. He served in the Engineer Corp. in the rebuilding of Germany during the Korean Conflict, and was a Veteran of the United States Army. Lou was active on the PW School Board, the VFW Fowler, Westphalia, Pewamo Post #3733, Hubbardston American Legion Post #182, the Pewamo Knights of Columbus Council #8071, the Michigan Professional Engineer Society, YMCA Board-Ionia County, the Hospice of Clinton County, St. Joseph's Parish Church Building Committee, the Michigan Asphalt Paving Awards Committee, and PW Sports Booster for 40 years. He married Florence "Toots" Droste on June 11, 1955 and she preceded him in death on December 18, 1992. He was also preceded in death by his parents; sister, Julia Fedewa, as well as brother-in-law Clare Boak and Brother Baby Jerry. He is survived by 2 daughters, Ann (Ken) Keilen of Westphalia, Sue (John) Witgen of Pewamo; 3 sons, Pat (Linda) Cook of Westphalia, Jim (Jacki) Cook of Kalamazoo, and Joe (Lynn) Cook of St. Joseph; 17 grandchildren: Mackenzie, Derrick, Kali, Carmen, Brittany, Logan, Austin, Hartlee, Dakota, London, Grant, and Lauren Cook, Jared, Abbie, and Nick Keilen, and Garrett and Ross Witgen; 3 sisters, Kate Boak, Theresa (Andrew) Angwin of Dewitt, Karen (Jerry) Freauff of Denver, CO, 1 brother, Ken (Anne) Cook of Grand Ledge and many nieces, nephews, and in-laws. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Charlon O. Mason, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003 at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rite of Committal following at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Pewamo. Military Honors will be provided by the VFW Fowler, Westphalia, Pewamo Post #3733. The family will receive friends at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. Rosaries will be prayed at 3 and 8 p.m. both days.
