Margaret Smith
Portland Age 84, passed away on Wednesday, August 19, 2009. She was born on November 14, 1924 in Eagle Township, Michigan the daughter of Harold and Jenny (Clandening) Higbee. Mrs. Smith was a member of First Baptist Church in Portland. She was a 5th generation schoolteacher who taught for 20 years in the Lansing School District at Genesee and Wexford Elementary Schools as a 6th grade teacher and enjoyed tending to her gardens (African Violets). She was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas; her parents and a brother Myron Higbee. Surviving are sons Stephen D. (Martha) Smith of Portland and Wesley Smith of Las Vegas, NV.; grandsons Stephen B. Smith of DeWitt and Matthew T. (Catherine) Smith of Lansing; sister Marion Spearbrecker. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson and Rev. Andy Brubaker at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 22, 2009 at the First Congregational Church, 421 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will be North Eagle Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. bridge St., Portland.
