Age 91, passed away on Sunday, January 15, 2006. She was born on May 24, 1914 in Westphalia, MI the daughter of William and Veronica (Martin) Arens. Mrs. Smith was a member of St. Gerard Catholic Church in Lansing, and St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Westphalia. Marie was an avid flower gardener and loved to travel. She retired from the State of Michigan Highway Department after 34 years of service. Marie was also a graduate of the Clinton County Normal College, and she was an organist, performing professionally in Lansing and resort areas of the northern Lower Peninsula. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Gerald and Joseph Arens; husband, Carl. Surviving are her sister, Rita Irrer; 6 nieces; 5 nephews. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Cecilio Reyna, Pastor at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2006 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery, Westphalia. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church until the time of the service. Complete arrangements are entrusted to the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Portland.
