Marjorie Benedict Obituary

Age 78, passed away on Sunday, February 15, 2004 in Ionia.  She was born on  January 26, 1926 in Ionia the daughter of Dale and Evelyn (Friend) Courser.  She attended Kilmartin School in Orange Township for eight years and graduated from Portland High School.  Mrs. Benedict did war work in the Ionia Factory and tied parachute shrouds in a Grand Rapids factory for money for college.  She attended Ferris Institute in Big Rapids on a partial scholarship for three years and earned a BA in Art Education, graduating with Honors in 1967.  She was a member and President of the Ionia Art Guild, taught 4H sewing with Mrs. Edward Sterner and Mrs. Clarence Aldrich, was a member of the First United Methodist Church and sang in the Methodist Choirs.  She taught art in Lowell Middle School from 1967 to 1972 while working on a Masters Degree in Art Education under Professor Gerald Mast of the University of Michigan Extension at Grand Rapids.  She married John Benedict on June 6, 1948 and together raised 4 children and renovated their historic home at 126 Lafayette Street in Ionia.  In 1998 they moved to Morrison Lake.  Mrs. Benedict was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughters, Evelyn Prince and Megan Prince.  Surviving are her husband of 55 years, John R. Benedict; 4 children, Deborah of Lansing, Dee Ann (Charles "Skip") Prince of Kalamazoo, Michael (Mila) of Berkley, California, and Dale Marie of Ionia; 2 grandchildren, Lauren Prince and John Michael Benedict; brother, Eugene (Clarabelle) Courser; sister, Lucy (Dave) Stolt; many nieces and nephews.  The Funeral Service will be conducted by the Rev. Martin Culver, Pastor at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, February 18, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church, Ionia.  Interment will take place in the Spring at Balcom Cemetery.  The family will receive friends at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, Cook Chapel, Ionia from 2-4 and 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday.  For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Evelyn Prince Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of Mrs. Marjorie Anne Benedict.
