Ionia Age 82, passed away on Thursday, December 23, 2010. She was born on June 26, 1928 in Lansing the daughter of August and Catherine (Pung) Stratz. Mary was a member of Ss Peter and Paul Catholic Church and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Knights of Columbus in Ionia. She graduated from Mt. Mercy School of Nursing and worked for 20 years at Heartland Healthcare in Ionia. On January 25, 1952 she married Pete Schafer and he preceded her in death on August 26, 2009. Mary is survived by her sisters, Sr. Augusta Stratz of Kalkaska and Evelyn Weitzel of Grand Ledge; nieces Judy (Ed) Clark of Ionia, Gail (Dan) Lower of Stanton and the Weitzel family; Mary's special cat, Katie. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Thomas Boufford at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Ionia. Rite of Committal will be in the spring. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Monday, December 27, 2010 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 220 Rich St., Ionia.
