Portland Age 97, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, October 12, 2010. Mary was born on February 16, 1913 in Sumner Township, Gratiot Co. the daughter of Nelson and Nora (Benedict) Long. She graduated from Ionia High School. She was a long time member of the Portland United Methodist Church. Mrs. VanAmburg worked for the Portland Drug Store for many years, she retired in 1972. She married Claude VanAmburg on June 13, 1942, he preceded her in death in 1989. She was also preceded in death by her parents; sister, Dorothy Story; son-in-law, Herm Schrauben and her step-son, Raymond VanAmburg. Surviving are her children, Carole Schrauben, and Marylou (Roger) Bullen; grandchildren, Jim (Karen) Howland, Patrick (Jami) Howland, Kristin (Wayne) Rivet, Jeannine (Dave) Brown, Kevin (Kathy) Bullen, Derek (Molly) Bullen; 16 great grandchildren; step-children, Louise Josephson, Irene Giar, Fred (Delores) VanAmburg and Lyle (Lavonne) VanAmburg; 15 step-grandchildren; several step great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews, one special niece Patty Story and her loving feline companion, Lacey. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Keith Treman at 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 15, 2010, at the Portland United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at North Eagle Cemetery. The family will receive frinds on Thursday, October 14, 2010, from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. For those desiring, memorial contributions may be made to the Portland United Methodist Church - General Fund, Ionia Co. Humane Society, and the North Eagle Cemetery Society in memory of Mrs. VanAmburg. Online condolences may be made at www.schraubenlehman.com. The family would like to thank Elaine Figgins for her care, compassion and love for their mother in the past year, also Sherry Miller for all of her acts of kindness given to their mother for the last several years
