Age 87, passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2009. He was born on April 16, 1921 in Ionia the son of Leo and Gladys (Merrill) Hinds. Mr. Hinds was a Veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army and was very proud to have served under General Patten. He was a member of the Portland VFW Post 4090 and worked for TRW for 36 years as a Comptroller before retiring. He served on the Ionia County ISD Board and the Portland School Board for several years. He stayed very active during retirement and enjoyed bowling, golfing, and hunting. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clarabell; brothers, George and Bill Hinds; Surviving are his children, Darlene McCrum of Memphis, TN, Daniel (Germaine) Hinds of Portland, and Douglas Hinds of Portland; 6 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; siblings, Herb (Marg Zischke) Hinds of Lansing, Adele (Larry) Hansen of Newaygo, and Rosetta (Dan) Thomas of Delaware, Ohio; very special friend and companion, Sue Malec of Portland; several nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland with the Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson officiating. Interment will take place in Danby Cemetery with Military Honors being provided by the Portland VFW Post 4090.
