Melvin Lee Baker Portland Age 74, passed away on Tuesday, July 6, 2004. He was born on December 27, 1929 in Lansing the son of Alvin and Ethel (Scott) McMann. Mr. Baker was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Portland and worked in the Maintenance Department for the Portland Public Schools for many years retiring in 1994. He was a member of the K of C Council #2168 in Portland, was avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed watching Tiger baseball. Mel donated his time to the St. Patrick's Football program for many years getting the field ready before and after games. He was preceded in death by his son, Melvin L. Baker, Jr., brother, Richard McMann and his parents. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Rosemary; children, Thomas (Michelle) Baker of Weidman, MI., Bonnie (Jeffrey) Lueder of Holt, and very special family, Lucy (George) Black of Portland; 8 grandchildren, Tiffany Baker, James Baker, Thomas Baker, Jr., Jessica Lueder, Douglas Lueder, Tarryn Lueder, Bryan Black, and Brandan Black; brother, Eugene Baker of Lansing; half sister, Rosaline Parcher of Belmont; sisters-in-law, Pauline (Roy) Wireman of Eagle and Mary McPherson of Berryton; brother-in-law, Edward (Lenora) Naseman of Lakeview; numerous nieces and nephews. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Larry King, Pastor at 11:00 a.m., Friday, July 9, 2004 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Rite of Committal will follow in Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home. A rosary will be prayed at 8:00 p.m.. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of one's choice.
