<p>Melvin W. "Muff" Smith</p><p>Westphalia</p><p>Age 97, beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather passed away on Friday, January 1, 2016 at home with his family at his side. He was born August 14, 1918 in Westphalia the son of John P. and Ida (Thome) Smith. Melvin was a member of St. Mary's Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening (planting potatoes), playing cards (especially solitaire) and reading the comics. Melvin was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Dorothea; siblings Leonard, Herb, Frank, Hiliary, Catherine Thelen, Rita Thelen, and Laurine Thelen; ; son-in-law, Robert Harr; great grandson, Grant Dunham. Surviving are his children, Larry (Virginia) Smith, Ann (Jim) Fedewa, Darlene (Harr) (Gary) Allen, Mary Lee (Jerry) Klein, Melanie (Gary) Pline, Joe (Pam) Smith, Linda (Pat) Feldpausch, Jack (Cheryl) Smith, Gail (Keith) Weber, and Jay Smith; 29 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; siblings, Rose (Les) Feldpausch, Pauline Feldpausch, Agnes Schomisch, and Adeline (Bernard) Feldpausch; in-laws, Bernadette Thelen, Eileen (Edward) Spitzley, and Therese Thelen; uncle, Ted Simon; special friend, Hubie. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m., Monday, January 4, 2016 at St. Mary's Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive friends 3-8 p.m. on Sunday at the St. Mary's Funeral Chapel, 210 N. Westphalia St., The rosary will be prayed at 2:30 p.m. Arrangements are by Lehman Funeral Homes.
