Patricia Hess

Patricia Ann Hess Ionia Patricia Ann Hess passed away peacfully on October 18, 2006 at her Ionia residence following a year's illness. Pat was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of Harold and Dorothy Gilner. She attended Grand Rapids South High School and eventually held secretarial and sales positions. She was especially proud of her employment in the advertising department of the Grand Rapids Herald, where she also served as the newspaper's food editor under the pseudo name, Mary Walker. Pat and her husband, Dave, were married December 10, 1965 at the First United Methodist Church in Ionia. She and Dave moved into their Caroline Street home a week later and resided together there until her passing. Pat's Ionia work career included secretarial positions at General Tire and the Michigan Training Unit. She was also an aid at the Guardian Angels Nursery School. Pat was a gifted raconteur, often describing her meeting with eccentric billionaire Howard Hughes, sitting at the piano with jazz great Duke Ellington while he played his signature song, "Satin Doll", taking dance lessons as a youth from former First Lady Betty Ford, and celebrating Mardis Gras in New Orleans with some of the city's elite in spite of traveling to the Crescent City with limited funds. In addition to her family and friends, Pat enjoyed trips to Las Vegas, casino visits to Mount Pleasant and Florida vacations. She was very fond of animals and enjoyed having dogs as part of her family, including her Cocker Spaniel, Scooter. Survivors in addition to her husband, Dave, are sons, Mark Mojzak of Wyoming, Michigan and Richie Hess of Battle Creek, daughter Kelly Arens and husband Todd of Ionia; grandchildren Quint Mojzak of Wyoming, Michigan and Sydney, Trevor and Tanner Arens of Ionia. Also surviving are daughter Susan and grandchildren Corey, Emily and Beth, all of whom reside in Iowa. A Memorial Service for immediate family members will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 23rd at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home in Ionia, with the Pastor Kenneth Harger of Shiloh Community Church officiating. As per Pat's request, there will be no visitation. Interment will be at the Tuttle Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ionia Area Hospice. The family plans to host a celebration in honor of Pat's memory for her many friends next spring or summer.
