Philip Tonkin Obituary

Age 70, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010 surrounded by his family. He was born on December 27, 1939 in Big Rapids, MI the son of Cecil and Sybil (Emery) Tonkin. He was raised by Stan and Ruth Tonkin and Ruth survives him. Phil worked at MDOT for 40 years and started the summer of his high school graduation. He taught classes at Lansing Community College and enjoyed working outside and in the garden. Phil enjoyed playing golf and was a volunteer for tournaments with the Michigan P.G.A.. He was an active member of the Portland Athletic Boosters and enjoyed high school sports, especially keeping stats for football and basketball. Surviving are his wife of 44 years, Carol; daughter Cheryl (Mark Graham) Tonkin of Williamston; brother John (Chris) Tonkin of Muskegon; sister Joyce (Richard) Donley of Paris, MI.; half sister Carolyn Schotts; mother-in-law Evelyn McGregor; brother-in-law Dave (Pat) McGregor; many nieces and nephews. The Funeral Service will be conducted by Pastor Keith Treman at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 27, 2010 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends 2-4 and 6-8 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
