Ruth Huhn Obituary

Ruth J. Huhn Portland Ruth Jean Augst Huhn, age 94, of Portland, Michigan passed away peacefully on February 19, 2017, surrounded by her loving family her last days. Ruth was a remarkable woman, Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother, who enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and whose spirit will remain in all the lives she has touched through the years. She had one of the kindest hearts ever, always thinking of someone else first. Mom had a dry sense of humor that we are sure helped her get through some difficult days. She was constantly picking on people – just ask her aides at Hazel Findlay, who cared for her these last few years. She loved to read, write and receive letters - the old-fashioned way with pen and paper in hand, watching the Detroit Tigers – or maybe it was just Justin Verlander. She enjoyed cooking, baking and canning various items. She also enjoyed sitting in her chair and crocheting or darning socks to make them last a little longer. She had countless friends over the years and would enjoy getting out for breakfast a couple of times a week. Mom especially loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and treasured their visits, smiles and their beautiful faces. Ruth was born on November 22, 1922, in Lake Odessa, Michigan. She was the daughter of Ernest and Reva (Cross) Augst. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Thomas Banash (1941) and her second husband of 49 years, Edwin Huhn; son, Thomas, at age 19, and son, Douglas; great-grandchild, Jeremiah Kiter; and brother, Gerald (Arlene) Clark. Surviving are her children, Dolores Beard, Keith (Sandra) Huhn, Marilyn (John Jenkins) Selden, Mary (Roger) Miller and daughter-in-law, Paulette, who was like another daughter to her. She had 18 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren. Ruth is also survived by her brother, Richard Clark and sister-in-law, Mert of Hastings, Michigan, along with several nieces and nephews The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 23, 2017 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Fr. Larry King presiding. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at Lehman Funeral Home, 210 E. Bridge Street, Portland, MI. A rosary will be prayed at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Father Flohe Foundation or WKAR-PBS, who gave her countless hours of entertainment.
