Portland Age 92, passed away on Monday, January 24, 2011. She was born at home on January 9, 1919 the daughter of Ralph and Myrtle (Mallet) Blackman. Evelyn received her Teaching Degree at Central Michigan University and her Masters Degree from Michigan State University. She started teaching in a one room schoolhouse at Halliday School for four years and then went to the Intermediate School District and worked in the "Yellow Bus" program as a reading consultant. She enjoyed playing bridge, golf, and crossword puzzles and enjoyed being with her family especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Upon their retirement, Evelyn and her husband, Robert spent winters in Citrus Park, Naples, Florida and at the family cottage in Elk Rapids, Michigan. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years, Robert and son-in-law Philip Tonkin. Surviving are her two children, David (Patricia) McGregor, and Carol Tonkin; grandchildren, Mark McGregor, Tiffany (Jeffrey) Kohn, Dean (Lisa) McGregor, and Cheryl Tonkin (Mark Graham); 9 great grandchildren. The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, January 28, 2011 at the Schrauben-Lehman Funeral Homes, 210 E. Bridge St., Portland with Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson presiding. Interment will follow at Portland Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 6-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Portland District Library - Children's Department.
