Samantha Carli Smith Obituary

Samantha Carli Smith received her angel wings on December 5, 2017. While her life seemed too short, Samantha touched the lives of everyone around her for the entire ten years she was with us. Samantha was a kind and thoughtful fourth grader at St. Mary School in Westphalia, Michigan. She was smart, loved to learn and read, and had a gift for making people smile. Samantha was often described as sweet, compassionate, loving, empathetic, and she valued honesty and determination. She was beautiful, and her big brown eyes sparkled with curiosity and a love for life. Samantha was full of faith and found happiness in God. She looked for the best in people and situations, often reminding others to “stay positive”. It was not uncommon to find Samantha trying to make people laugh with her goofy faces or funny comments. She was always watching out for her younger siblings and had a special connection with her twin sister. Samantha enjoyed playing basketball and softball, spending time with her family and friends, and cuddling her cat, Skittles. Samantha hoped to become either an actress or a teacher, showing her flare for having fun, as well as helping others, and planned on traveling to Paris as soon as she could. Although she will be missed every day, Samantha will remain in the hearts of those who loved her forever. Samantha will be lovingly remembered by her parents, Tony and Kristy (Gusse) Smith of Westphalia; three sisters, twin, Kendra, Joslyn, and Chloe; and one brother, Brady. She is also survived by her grandparents, Don Gusse and Kimberly (Braidwood) Gusse, and Glenn and Marie (Pohl) Smith; aunts and uncles, Angela Gusse, Don Gusse, Marc Gusse, Nikki Gusse, Zach Gusse, Tim Smith, Todd (Brandy) Smith, Cami (Chad) Huhn, Ted (TeAnn) Smith, and Troy (Lisa) Smith; great-grandparents, Revella (Hanses) Smith and Ken and Ruth (Pennington) Braidwood; and 25 loving cousins. Samantha will continue to be remembered by her community, extended family, dear friends, and cherished classmates. Samantha was greeted in heaven by her aunt, Carli Smith. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Eric Weber at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 9, 2017 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Westphalia. Rite of Committal will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive visitors on Thursday from 1-3 p.m. and again on Friday from 2-8 p.m. at the St. Mary School Gymnasium, 209 N. Westphalia Street, Westphalia. On Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m., the families of the St. Mary School Students are invited to a School Prayer Service and Program where Samantha’s life will be celebrated with music from the children’s choir, Scripture, and a Rosary. There will also be a time for family and friends to share memories on Friday evening at 5:00 p.m. in the school gymnasium. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes. Online condolences may be made at www.lehmanfuneralhomes.com.
