Portland Age 69, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2012. He was born on September 24, 1942 the son of Donald and Ruth (Lockwood) French. Tom loved bowling, golfing, playing horseshoes and sailing. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy where he was a Sonar man and was a proud member of the American Legion Post. Tom had a soft heart for stray animals and brought several into his home. He was preceded in death by his father, Don; brother, Chuckie French; sister, Kathy French; son, Tim; granddaughter, Angel. Surviving are his wife of 20 years, Coleen; daughter, Angela (David) Laidlaw; step-son, Michael Tallent; mother, Ruth; grandchildren Jenna Hoppes and Cole French; step-grandchildren Dave (Meg) Laidlaw, Mike Laidlaw, Beth Laidlaw and Andy Laidlaw; sisters Kristi (Rich) Newer and Gail (John) McDermott; many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of Tom's Life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at the V.F.W. Post #4090, 1324 E. Bridge St., Portland. Interment will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Portland Congregational Church or the Ionia Co. Humane Society in memory of Tom. Arrangements are with the Lehman Funeral Homes.
