Annabelle Mulholland Obituary

Annabelle “Annie” Inez Mulholland, 95, of St. Joseph, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on April 21, 2019. Annie was born in Benton Harbor, MI, on April 8, 1924, daughter of Reinhold and Helen (Modro) Keene. She grew up in Benton Harbor with her two sisters, graduated from Benton Harbor High School and enjoyed family activities. After graduation, she met her husband, Oliver N. Slater, Jr. to whom she was married for 25 years. They had three children, Sandra, Oliver “Butch” and Michael. The family home was in Benton Harbor. Family was always the most important thing to Mom! Everyone who met Mom was touched and impressed with her kindness and joyful personality! She loved to laugh and had a smile for everyone and was always ready for a trip to see family and friends. As her son-in-law, Frank Rexroth (deceased) would tell her she was “stylin and profilin” whenever she was going out. Her clothes, shoes and purse all had to match. The family moved to Jackson, MS, for a short time, Wichita, KS, and eventually to Baltimore, MD. On a trip to Atlantic City, in 1971, she met and married Eugene Mulholland. They made their home in Baltimore, MD., and eventually settled in Phoenix, AZ. After Eugene’s passing, Annie moved back to Benton Harbor. Mom made friends wherever she went, which showed through her work ethic. She loved working as a bookkeeper, office manager, insurance/financial planning and payroll administrator/senior services for the local AARP office. Her last job was at the age of 85 and it was Mom’s third retirement. Annabelle was preceded in death by her parents Reinhold and Helen Keene, her husband Eugene Mulholland, son, Oliver N. Slater III “Butch”, and sister Dorothy Granger. Annabelle is survived by her daughter, Sandra (Frank-deceased) Rexroth of Mount Vernon, WA; son, Michael (Terry) Slater of St. Joseph, MI; sister, Eleanor (Carl – deceased) Gumpert of South Haven, MI; grandchildren, Mark (Tina) Rexroth of Concrete, WA, Christopher Slater of Schoolcraft, MI, Summer (John) Chellman, Jeremy (Angela) Slater of Portage, MI; great-grandchildren, Devon Rexroth and Kacie Rexroth of Birdsview, WA, Ricci (Shawn) Winchell of Spokane, WA, Anna and Jake Chellman of Stevensville, MI, Dion and Shiloh Slater of Portage, MI; great great-grandchildren, Elliot and Jude Winchell of Spokane, WA and many greatly beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends. A special thank you to Mom’s doctors and the caring, loving staff at Royalton Manor and to her niece Cindy Granger, for her visits every Sunday and bringing her favorite Cracker Barrel lunch that she loved! A private family graveside service will be held at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford, MI. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, St. Joseph, MI.
