Dorothy Jane (Bittner) Stover, 98, passed away Wednesday, April 21, at the Royalton Township home of her daughter, Karleen E. Stover. A lifetime resident of Sodus Township – living on two farms, five miles apart – she was born on March 20, 1923, at Tabor Sanitarium in Benton Harbor to Dan and Edith (Prillwitz) Bittner. Visitation at Starks & Menchinger Family Funeral Home, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph will be Sunday evening, April 25 from 5-8pm. Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, April 26 at Napier Parkview Baptist Church, 245 West Napier Ave., Benton Harbor with Rev. Dan Golladay officiating. Private committal will occur later that day at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Sodus Township. As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to Napier Parkview Baptist Church or Berrien County Cancer Service. She was a 40-year cancer survivor. Dorothy was a graduate of Benton Harbor High School – class of 1941; attended Twin City Business College and Michigan State College. At one time she was employed locally at the Bureau of Social Aid and later the Farmers & Merchants National Bank in Benton Harbor. On September 8, 1946, she married Max O. Stover at the home of her parents in Sodus Township. To this union five daughters were born. For over 50 years, she and Max operated Riverdale Farms in Sodus. She loved the farm life and worked right beside Max in the orchards, grapes and corn fields; teaching work ethic and raising strong daughters. She loved driving tractors and fork lifts. She was active in the Napier Parkview Baptist Church as a pianist and Sunday School teacher. Whenever the church doors were open, she was there. She loved reading her tattered Bible and always had a verse to share on any subject or event. She was proud of the fact that the majority of her descendants and their families live in Michigan. She is survived by her daughters Kristine Stover (Brad Miller), Darlene (Roger) Litaker, Maxine Valenti and Karleen Stover (Mick Whitehead). Ten grandchildren: Amy Torres, Adam Litaker, Sabrina Harras, Rebekah Kruzel, Bridget Bahner, Abe, Max, Sam, Ben and Laurel Whitehead. Ten great grandchildren: Nathan Litaker, Sophia and Sarah Torres, Brody Litaker, Carter and Ethan Harras, Aria and Asher Kruzel, Carson and Lincoln Bahner, plus two more on the way. She was preceded by her parents, husband Max, sister Jeanne Schulz and first-born daughter Sharon Ann Stover. She always said she had a great life, living from the “horse and buggy” days to our amazing technological days. She lived in a most interesting period of time. She was the most sought-after partner in family games of Trivial Pursuit. She was a very patriotic person and loved to see the American flag flying at homes and businesses as well as at the beginning of a parade. She would always say, “if you don’t like the good old USA – go someplace else”. GOD BLESS AMERICA!!
