Winfred Muckelrath Obituary

Winfred Herschel Muckelrath was born on December 6, 1928 and died on January 9, 2015. He was the son of Herschel Lee Muckelrath and Myra Sorey Muckelrath of Burns, Mississippi who owned and operated a general merchandise store and post office. His sister, Wiladyne Rhinehart, of Waynesboro, Mississippi preceded him in death. Winfred was married to Eugenia Muckelrath, daughter of Alvin C. Hegwood and Zelma Tally Hegwood of Pineville, Mississippi, and he was the loved father of their 5 daughters – Alice Rodriguez, deceased; Janice Berry, deceased; Linda Frenz of Brandon, MS, wife of Dr. John Frenz; Sara Bridges of Mendenhall, MS, wife of David Bridges; and her twin, Rachel Blackledge of Petal, MS, wife of David Blackledge. Winfred was the grandfather of Jonathan Bassett, Mills River, NC; Victoria Friess, Portage, MI; Bethany Hicks, Indianapolis, IN; Charles Grantham, Denham Springs, LA; Emil Grantham, Brookhaven, MS; Kakki Gaude, Natchez, MS; Michael Webb, Hattiesburg, MS; Matthew Webb, Hattiesburg, MS; and Weslie Ann Blackledge, Petal, MS. Additionally, W.H. Muckelrath had eleven great-grandchildren at death with the expectation of more to come through God’s blessings. Life for Winfred centered on devotion to God, love of family, and hard work. Even though W. H. Muckelrath founded and then managed Raleigh Furniture Company of Raleigh, MS for decades, he became a tree farmer in Smith County to pursue his passion for agriculture for which he had earned a B.S. degree from Mississippi State University. At State, Winfred was a member of Phi Kappa Phi and Alpha Zeta. After graduating from MSU, Winfred volunteered for the army and served 2 years in the Korean War. Prior to his deployment, he and Eugenia were married at Fort Jackson in Columbia, SC. When he returned from service in the U.S. Army, he worked a short time for the MSU Extension Service in Leland, MS before moving back to Burns, MS to work for the Bank of Raleigh. During his entrepreneurship in Raleigh, Winfred served as president of the Lion’s Club and was an active member of the Raleigh United Methodist Church. After retiring from the furniture business, Winfred shared time in Raleigh, Picayune, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He enjoyed taking trips to the beach and the mountains, gardening, visiting family, and walking in the woods. During his last few years, Winfred was a resident of the State Veterans Home in Collins, Mississippi as he battled Alzheimer’s, yet he was attended closely by family and staff until death. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
